Bonobo. Thom Yorke. RÜFÜS DU SOL.
I don’t prefer to make comparisons, especially in regards to music or art (because nobody should ever be put in a box). However, they work in order to organize things a bit.
Comprised of solo projects Modeselektor and Apparat, Berlin-based band Moderat have a discography that dates back to the early 2000s and they seem to be getting better and better only with time.
I made a huge mistake not seeing them at Lightning In A Bottle last year, and all I can say is, if I ever get the opportunity to right that wrong, I’d take it in a heartbeat.
If you listen to any one thing I try to shove down your earbuds this year, let it be this…
Probably one of the best bands you’ve never heard of. Their album ‘III‘ is flawless start to finish. Enjoy their art below!
There is a list I keep…
A list full of names of musicians who one day, I would like to do a write up/feature on.
“Timing is everything” as they say.
I don’t like to force something that isn’t really there, or worse; write when the words just won’t flow. I’m sure the same goes for any artists out there who are struggling to produce something of substance.
DROELOE doesn’t seem to be having any shortage of flow however…
The duo has been slowly churning out hits since I first heard them with up and coming trap star Holly on their addictive track ‘Allday’:
Every song they have put out since has been unique and fluid, and it doesn’t seem like they’re slowing down at all given they’ve released yet another amazing track with super producer San Holo just yesterday.
I must say, it is truly a pleasure to the ears to listen to the bitbird boys and I can’t wait to hear what they come up with next.
Enjoy the latest and greatest from them below, and if you dig it, it’s available for free thru TONEDEN here. Thanks for reading, bless.
Just a moment with you. (repeat 2x)
I woke up everyday last week with those five words resounding in my head…press play on this future bass delight by artist Kaivon, and I’ll bet the same thing will happen to you.
(if you like it, hit up Artist Engine and get it for free.)
It’s not always about finding the wettest behind-the-ear, up-and-coming 16 yr-old artist…sometimes there are producers that came out way back when and just so happen to still be killin’ it. (see; KASKADE, Flume, Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, etc…)
One of those DJs for me is Seven Lions.
And with 3.65M followers on Soundcloud alone, he sure isn’t hurting for any more blog coverage. Doesn’t bother me any, because he just released yet another beautiful track showcasing that classic bass-heavy, dreamscapy glitch sound that I can only ever seem to find from a few people that’s done so well.
One of the first artists to get me into genres like dubstep and trance, I will always have a soft spot in my heart and ears for his tunes.
Some artists are just like a fine wine ya’ know? Enjoy his newest single and one of his best remixes below. Thanks for reading.
Right then. Right when you’ve exhausted the 29th trap instrumental, or the 9th #future song being reposted in your Soundcloud feed (all of which sound the same). Right when you’ve listened to the same build/drop again and again in every poor rendition of already established artist ripoffs you can tolerate, that’s when it happens…
That new song, that new artist.
That new found soundbyte that is just 4 minutes full of whatever je ne sais quoi it is about it that makes you go, 🙌🏽 🙌🏽.
That’s what happened to me about a week ago when I stumbled across the silky smooth sounds of ‘N i G H T S‘.
Think early Craig David; suave/pop vocals…meets bounce, plus bass. And a little something extra I can’t quite put my finger on…so I just downloaded their songs (for free) instead 🙃.
Here are my top tracks from the up and coming duo:
Thanks for reading, stay gold.
1. having, expressive of, or characterized by intense feeling; passionate; fervent:an ardent vow; ardent love. 2. vehement; fierce. 3. burning, fiery, or hot: “the ardent core of a star“.
Appropriate, I think.
Yes, it is cheesy to define words and artist names, but words are all we have… wouldn’t you agree?
Words mean a lot to me (or at least I think they do).But sometimes, words fall short. Ever feel something you literally couldn’t describe?
Some people have the incredible capability of conveying their emotions via sound and other electromagnetic waves~
Apply the definition of Ardency to their most recent EP ‘For You, Only‘, and I would gather that these guys feel some type of way about the music they put out.
Personally I have been a fan of Ardency since I first heard their unforgettable 2 track EP: ‘Gradience’. Two plus years later, they are crossing over genres and creating a niche for themselves betwixt edm goers and indie fans alike. Now, with an even more defined sound that spans a multitude of decades, one would find it nearly impossible to try and fit them in any kind of box.
And that’s that shit we do like.
Thanks for reading, enjoy.
The definition of unique is: ‘being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else‘.
Enter Justin Hartinger…
In thinking of other artists to liken his sound to, or use as a reference of what to expect when listening to the Seattle-based Producer & DJ, I came up with nothing. My mind went totally blank. This is usually a good sign when discovering new music from an artist.
If you check Justins’ Soundcloud, his creations are self-described as, “emotional dance music”.
I couldn’t agree more.
Whether it’s the (very dark) Darknet EP–collaborated with by one of my absolute favorites, LEViT∆TE.–his bouncy, trap-like twist on the new house classic ‘Don’t Go‘ by the other Justin (Justin Martin) or one of his many other singles that have brought new life to my headphones and speakers…it’s undeniable that Justin Hartinger was put on earth to make good music for you to feel to.
Below all these words are my current top picks of all Justin’s gems (almost all of which are available for free via TONEDEN here).
Thanks for tuning in guys, I have nothing but love and appreciation for you.
Our first artist feature in 2017 is someone whom you’ve probably never heard of before.
(you’re welcome hipsters)
Jeremy Stern AKA palmingo hails from the foggy San Francisco Bay Area, and although he isn’t currently touring as of yet–it will probably be just a matter of time before the public picks up on the saucey sounds on his new and latest EP, ‘Birds Of Paradise‘.
A fan of artists such as: Flume, Mr. Carmack, Sam Gellaitry, and What So Not; his first concert ever was Foo Fighters back in the 6th grade.
Soundcloud lurker since 2011, he is now heating up your Home Stream with #wavy tracks like, ‘What So New‘ & ‘Timeless’ (track No.1 on the playlist below).
His goals in this lifetime are, “to see the Northern Lights, and help the world in some way.” What a nice dude…and to top it off, he’s made his EP available HERE, for free. Now that’s just hella cool.
Holy shit you guys…it’s almost over.
Typically I don’t really remember ‘years‘ for what happened in them or whatever…I can hardly remember what I ate 48 hours ago (probably something with potatoes though).
2016 was an emotional shit storm for yours truly.
A year filled with a rise in my anxiety on a daily basis, and me questioning everyone and everything coming and going from my social circle to the people I saw on the streets.
I’m usually distracted by the changes and “fresh starts” that a New Year tantalizes us with, but this December I just feel happy to be going into the next 365 days with all my limbs and wits about me…
Something I have always been fairly decent or been consistent with is maintaining a playlist of sorts, and around one year ago today I started keeping a log of the songs I have deemed “Best of 2016” entitled, ‘3016’.
So here it is; a cool playlist for your hopeful NYE get together, or any ready-to-get-lit-fest you may have going on this weekend.
These are all songs that either stood out amongst the rest or have been on heavy repeat, getting me through the life-sized obstacle course that was the past year of my life.
From the bottom of my heart to yours, enjoy.
I usually try to post artists that have an appeal to the everyday person.
(meaning I don’t post too much “off-the-wall” content)
That being said, that is quite the extremely boring and safe way to run a blog so I have decided I won’t continue to save face for those who aren’t as open with their music tastes.
As much as I like ambient/chill music and the general upbeat/positive feelings that accompany a lot of the popular electronic stuff you hear at local shows or even festivals; there is a darker side to all of us.
The grittier, less-refined versions of us that we attempt to hide from everyone…the side we keep hidden away in the shadows and torn out pages of journals that we never share, fearing the realities that may come from the judgements of our friends, loved ones, and worse than them, ourselves.
Maybe it’s time to face that part of us that we refuse to give light to. Coming face to face with all the aspects we wish we didn’t see when looking in the mirror, choosing to illuminate our preferred parts instead. We are not only good or bad, we are not always right or wrong, we are both the yin AND the yang, the highs and the lows, the happy and the sad.
Music is not always uplifting. Sometimes it’s angry, sometimes it’s depressing. Sometimes it’s just some crazy alien sounds unlike anything your ears have ever experienced before. Art is something that makes you feel. And as long as you feel something, rest assured that it’s working.
LEViT∆TE is an artist I turn to when I choose to embrace my dark side rather than run the opposite way. His music is bass-heavy and heartfelt, with massive breakdowns and dark undertones that take you on an emotional journey from start to finish and somehow always leaves me with a sense that everything will work itself out in the end. Thanks for reading, enjoy.
